The DecorPositive Home Decor Knowledge Hub
Whether you are beginning your first renovation or refining a well-loved space, understanding the language of interior design is the first step. Browse our curated glossary of terms, explore our design framework, and discover how we bring each concept to life for clients across Wales.
Accent Wall
A single wall finished in a contrasting colour, texture, or material to create a focal point. We often pair accent walls with bespoke shelving or art curation to anchor a room's narrative.
Biophilic Design
Integrating natural elements—living plants, natural light, organic textures—into interior spaces. Research links biophilic environments to lower stress and improved wellbeing at home.
Colour Temperature
The warmth or coolness of a colour palette, measured in Kelvin for lighting or described as warm/cool for paint. Getting temperature right is fundamental to mood and perceived room size.
Dado Rail
A moulding fixed horizontally along a wall, traditionally at chair height. Dado rails allow two-tone wall treatments and protect surfaces in high-traffic hallways.
Feng Shui
A Chinese philosophical system of spatial arrangement aiming to harmonise energy flow. We incorporate Feng Shui principles selectively when clients value spatial balance and intentional placement.
Hygge
The Danish concept of cosy contentment. In practice, this translates to layered textiles, warm lighting, and intimate seating arrangements that invite lingering.
Mood Board
A curated collage of colours, textures, images, and material samples that captures the intended feel of a space before any physical work begins. Every DecorPositive project starts here.
Soft Furnishings
Textiles and fabric-based elements—curtains, cushions, throws, upholstery—that add warmth, colour, and acoustic comfort to a room. Often the fastest route to a visual refresh.

Client Pathway: How Engagements Unfold
Initial Conversation
A relaxed phone or video call where we learn about your space, lifestyle, and aspirations. No commitment required—just an honest exchange of ideas.
"The first call alone gave me clarity on what I actually wanted. No pressure, just insight." — T. Meredith, Cardiff
Scope & Mood Board
We define the engagement tier (see our matrix above), establish budget boundaries, and produce a mood board that crystallises the visual direction before any spend.
Design, Source & Style
Depending on your chosen tier, we produce drawings, source materials, coordinate trades, and style the finished space. Progress is documented and shared at each milestone.
"They photographed every stage. I could see my living room evolving in real time from my office." — K. Osei, Newport
Editorial Note: Why Terminology Matters in Home Decor
Walk into any interiors showroom and you will hear terms tossed around—wainscoting, pelmet, trompe-l'œil—as though everyone shares the same vocabulary. They do not. The gap between professional jargon and homeowner understanding is one of the biggest sources of miscommunication in residential design projects.
At DecorPositive, we built this knowledge hub not as a marketing exercise but as a practical tool. When a client understands what "colour temperature" means, the conversation about their kitchen lighting moves three times faster. When they know the difference between a dado rail and a picture rail, the quote they receive makes immediate sense.
We update this glossary quarterly, adding terms our clients ask about most often. If you encounter a concept during your project that is not listed here, let us know—we will add it and credit you for the suggestion.
